Kool & The Gang ‎– Emergency / Cherish (1984)

The title track and fourth single from Kool & The Gang’s eighteenth studio album was released in a number of variants but this UK 12″ may be the most interesting, managing to encompass all four singles from the “Emergency” album across a 12″ single.

First up is the “Long Remix” of “Emergency” which strangely enough runs 1min 23sec shorter than the “Extended Mix” on the US 12″, this is followed up on the flipside with a medley of the first and second singles from the album, Fresh & Misled, this is great mix of two tracks that had already gone Top 10 in the US.

Finally, the 12″ closes out with the extended 12-inch version of “Cherish” which includes the same flourishes that were added to the single/video version of the tune, plus saxophone parts during various sections of the song (introduction, bridge, etc.), including a whole additional sax interlude after the first chorus.

“Cherish” was the third single released from the band’s multi-platinum album, Emergency. “Cherish” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in September 1985, remaining in the runner-up position for three weeks. It was a number-one hit on both the R&B and adult contemporary charts in the U.S., spending one week atop the R&B chart and six weeks atop the AC chart. In the UK, the song reached number four on the UK Singles Chart.
