Scritti Politti With Ranking Ann ‎– The Word Girl (Flesh & Blood) (1985)

Scritti Politti are a British pop band, originally formed in 1977 in Leeds, Yorkshire, Englandby Cardiff-born singer-songwriter Green Gartside. He is the only member of the band to have remained throughout the group’s history.

Initially a left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid-1980s, enjoying significant success in the record charts in the UK and the US. The group’s most successful album, 1985’s Cupid & Psyche 85, spawned three UK Top 20 hits with “Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)”, “Absolute”, and “The Word Girl”, as well as a US Top 20 hit with “Perfect Way”.

“The Word Girl” has a similar sound to many of the other group’s songs, with a smooth R&B-inspired sound with Green Gartside’s soulful vocals on top. On release, this song became the band’s biggest UK hit single, climbing to #6 on the UK Singles Chart.

The UK 12″ single added a megamix by Mastermind of Wood Beez/Absolute/Hypnotize from the “Cupid & Psyche 85” LP.

  1. Great track, great band. Love the Turntable Mix, too, which appeared on the Aussie reissue of either Perfect Way or The Word Girl. I’d have to pull my singles out! IIRC! Thanks, your rips are truly awesome.
