The Members – Radio (1982)

The Members recorded their second and final album for Virgin Records in 1980 with the aptly named  “1980 – The Choice Is Yours”. After leaving Virgin in 1981, they broadened their sound by introducing a full-time horn section, Steve ‘Rudi’ Thompson (ex-X Ray Spex) and Simon Lloyd (Bananarama and Icehouse) and embracing funk and rap as well as reggae.

A one-off single, Radio, was released on Island Records. The band joined up with producer Martin Rushent (Human League, Altered Images, the Go-Go’s), who was a master of making unpromisingly non-commercial bands have big shiny hit records without losing their souls in the process.

“Radio” would become a major chart hit in Australia while another track from the Martin Rushent sessions “Working Girl” would provide the band with their biggest US hit.

The Members – Going West (1982)

The Members was formed by lyricist Nicky Tesco (Nick Lightowlers) in 1976, through an invited audition at a recording studio at Tooley Street, London. The original personnel, with Tesco (vocals), was Gary Baker (guitar), and Steve Morley (bass guitar), initially with Steve Maycock then Clive Parker (drums). Morley and Parker were later replaced by Chris Payne and Adrian Lillywhite.

In 1978/79 The Members continued to play the London pub and club circuit, and became a feature in the music press. They signed to Virgin Records in 1978, for which they recorded “The Sound of the Suburbs”, produced by Steve Lillywhite. This became The Members’ biggest chart success and their best known song in the UK.

The Members’ first album, At the Chelsea Nightclub, was followed by a second for Virgin, 1980 – The Choice Is Yours. Their last album was Going West, issued a year earlier as Uprhythm, Downbeat (1982) in the US. The album featured the single” Radio”, which made the Top 10 in parts of Australia.

A number of tracks from final album Uprhythm, Downbeat were released as remixes with three appearing on the Arista US 12″ of “Going West”, all produced and remixed by Martin Rushent and Dave Allen.
